Auto insurance is mandatory in the state of Utah. If you are issued a citation for driving without proof of insurance could result in fines, suspension of your driving privileges, and your vehicle could be impounded. There is a fine of not less than $400 for a first offense and not less than $1,000 for a second or subsequent offense. You will also have your driver license suspended until evidence of insurance is provided. Lastly, you will need to maintain evidence of insurance with the Department of Public Safety for a three year period using in the form of an SR-22 certificate.

The state of Utah requires a minimum coverage of $25,000 of Bodily Injury Liability per person up to a total of $50,000 for all persons injured in any one accident and $15,000 of Property Damage Liability. This level of coverage is referred to as 25/50/15 coverage. Utah law also requires a minimum Personal Injury Protection coverage of $3,000 and a minimum Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage of $25,000 per person up to a total of $50,000 per accident for bodily injury caused by an uninsured and/or underinsured driver. Bear in mind, state minimums are often set very low and may not fully protect you from financial loss. Most consumer groups and most agents typically recommend a minimum of $100,000 of bodily injury protection per person and $300,000 per accident. Additional coverage, such as medical payments, comprehensive and collision are also advisable.

Utah uses a no-fault system of insurance. This means that your insurance company will pay for your injury costs up to a specified limit regardless of who is at fault in an accident. For personal injury claims, you must first submit your claim to the insurance company covering your vehicle. For each person injured, the first $3,000 in medical expenses will be covered by your policy. If the cost of your injuries exceeds your PIP coverage, the other driver can then be held liable for additional expenses if they are found to be 'at fault' in the accident. The other driver has the same rights so be sure to protect yourself from financial loss, consider carrying more coverage than the state law requires.
